The increasing amount of certificates and seals of quality in (stationary) health care make it more and more difficult for patients to identify those with meaning, e.g. when choosing a healthcare provider for an elective treatment. While such certificates are supposed to signal quality of care to patients and to thereby facilitate the decision-making process, it often remains non-transparent and unclear what those certificates entail and mean. Which conclusions can patients draw from certifications? How can criteria to assess the quality and meaning of certificates be developed and utilised?
