Dr. med. José SANDOVAL
Institut Curie & Hopital Universitaire de Genève
Médecin Oncologue et Chercheur
Description
José Sandoval is a Portuguese medical oncologist with a particular interest in breast cancer. He is based at the Geneva University Hospitals, Switzerland, where he underwent postgraduate clinical training in medical oncology.
After graduating from Medical School at the New University of Lisbon (Portugal), he obtained his PhD in Oncology in 2015 from the University of Cambridge (UK) for his doctoral work at the Breast Cancer Functional Genomics laboratory headed by Prof. Carlos Caldas.
While a resident at the Geneva University Hospitals, he became a member of the Populational Epidemiology Unit of the Geneva University Hospitals Primary Care Department, headed by Prof Idris Guessous. The access to large population-level datasets allowed him to expand his capacity to execute complex statistical analyses with large datasets and answer complex questions related to inequalities in exposure to risk factors (e.g. tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption) and screening (e.g. mammography uptake, colon cancer screening). His commitment to learning and doing research at the population level was rewarded by the attribution of the Ferenc Bojan Young Investigator Award by the European Association of Public Health in 2018 and being awarded an MSc in Public Health with Distinction by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2021. Furthermore, he was the principal investigator of a pioneer pilot feasibility study of implementing patient-reported outcomes in the Oncology Department of the Geneva University Hospitals.
He is currently a clinical and research fellow at the Circulating Tumour Biomarkers Laboratory of the Institut Curie (France) under the mentorship of Prof Francois-Clément Bidard. He is collaborating and leading several clinical and translational research projects. He is a member of the European Society of Medical Oncology's Magnitude of Clinical Benefit Scale extended working group and a staunch supporter of value-based health care and evidence-based medicine
